An ACRO Police Certificate is an official UK criminal record check issued by the ACRO Criminal Records Office, specifically designed for use by overseas authorities rather than UK employers. An Important Current Issue for Saudi-Bound Applicants
ACRO has confirmed a postal and courier disruption affecting a number of Middle East destinations, including Saudi Arabia. At present, ACRO cannot post physical Police Certificates directly to these countries. If you’re applying for use in Saudi Arabia, you’ll need to provide an alternative UK postal address — such as your own home address or ours — so the certificate can be delivered and then apostilled and forwarded on to Saudi Arabia from there. This is easy to miss if you’re applying without guidance, and it’s one of the most common reasons UK applicants get stuck partway through the process right now.
Does Your ACRO Certificate Need an Apostille?
In most cases, yes. Saudi authorities generally require the ACRO certificate to be legalised before they’ll accept it, which means it needs an FCDO apostille before submission. Since Saudi Arabia joined the Hague Apostille Convention in December 2022, an FCDO apostille alone is typically sufficient — full Saudi Embassy legalisation on top is usually no longer required, though it’s worth confirming this against your specific visa category before assuming it applies to you.
