Moving to Saudi Arabia for work starts with one non-negotiable requirement: a local sponsor. Every work visa application is tied to an employer or sponsoring entity registered inside the Kingdom, and the entire process — from visa quota to final residency — runs through that sponsor's compliance standing with Saudi labour authorities.
How the Saudi work visa process works
The process is employer-driven and coordinated primarily through two government platforms: Qiwa, which governs labour approvals and employment contracts, and Muqeem, which manages residency and visa status once you're in the country. Your employer first secures a visa quota allocation based on their commercial registration and Nitaqat (Saudization) rating — a compliance score that affects how easily a company can bring in foreign workers.
Once a signed employment contract is documented on Qiwa and the employer has an available visa quota, they obtain a visa authorisation number, at which point the application moves to your side of the process in the UK.
Documents you'll need
- A signed employment contract or job offer letter from your Saudi employer
- A passport valid for at least six months beyond your intended date of entry
- An attested copy of your educational qualifications — often verified through the Dataflow credential-verification system before Saudi authorities will accept it
- A medical fitness certificate from an approved Wafid (formerly GAMCA) medical centre
- A police conduct certificate from your home country, typically also requiring UK apostille
Attestation is usually the step that catches people out. Documents issued in the UK generally need an FCDO apostille before Saudi authorities will accept them — and for certain document types, most notably educational qualifications, an extra layer of verification through Dataflow or Ministry attestation on top of that.
The Wafid medical exam
Every applicant must pass a pre-employment medical fitness examination through the GCC-approved medical centre network, known as Wafid (formerly branded GAMCA). You'll register through the official Wafid portal, select an approved centre, and complete a general physical exam along with standard blood, urine and chest X-ray screening. The resulting fitness certificate typically carries a limited validity window — commonly cited as around 60 days — so if your visa submission is delayed past that window, the medical exam usually needs to be repeated.
How long does a Saudi work visa take?
Once your sponsor submits the visa block through Qiwa, processing generally takes a few weeks, though this can extend meaningfully during peak hiring periods or if any submitted document needs correction or resubmission. After approval, you'll receive an entry visa to travel, followed by Iqama (residency permit) issuance after arrival and a further mandatory medical screening inside the country.
Practical things to plan around
- Your passport needs at least six months of validity at the point of application, not just on arrival
- Dependants (spouse, children) cannot be added to your visa until your own Iqama has been issued — if you're bringing family, it's worth starting that paperwork trail in parallel rather than waiting
- The old No Objection Certificate requirement for changing employers within Saudi Arabia has been phased out, but sponsor compliance and Nitaqat status still affect how smoothly a transfer goes
