Not every expatriate working in Saudi Arabia is eligible to bring their family members under a dependent Iqama. The ability to sponsor dependents is tied to your job category, salary, and compliance with Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development regulations.
Below are five professions that typically cannot sponsor dependents under a Saudi Iqama:
1. Domestic Workers
Housemaids, drivers, gardeners, and similar household staff are not allowed to sponsor spouses, children, or parents. Their Iqamas are strictly tied to the household sponsor.
2. Construction and General Laborers
Professions listed under “labour” (such as mason, plumber, electrician, or general construction worker) are not eligible for dependent sponsorship, regardless of years of service.
3. Farm Workers and Agricultural Staff
Professions like shepherds, farm laborers, or livestock workers are excluded from dependent sponsorship due to their classification under non-family supporting roles.
4. Drivers in Certain Categories
Some driver categories (e.g., heavy vehicle drivers under labor class) cannot apply for dependent sponsorship, unless employed in higher-tier corporate roles where exceptions may be granted.
5. Low-Skill or Unclassified Occupations
Any job titles categorized under “helper,” “cleaner,” or other non-technical roles generally do not qualify. These categories fall outside the Ministry’s criteria for family sponsorship.
Key Considerations
Salary Thresholds: Even for eligible professions, you must meet the minimum salary requirement (typically SAR 3,500–5,000+ depending on case).
Official Approval: Each application is reviewed, and exceptions are rare.
Employer Role: Your employer only sponsors your work Iqama. You must apply separately for dependent sponsorship.
Only certain professions and income levels qualify to sponsor family members under a Saudi Iqama. Workers in domestic, agricultural, and general labor roles are usually excluded. Always verify your profession’s eligibility before planning dependent sponsorship.
