Temporary Work Visa vs. Standard Work Visa for Saudi Arabia: Which Applies to You?

Applying for a Saudi work visa from the UK is mandatory for anyone who has secured employment in the Kingdom, whether the role is permanent or project‑based. The visa you choose determines the length of stay, the type of sponsorship required, and the subsequent residency process under an Iqama.

Standard (Long‑Term) Work Visa

A long‑term work visa is intended for employees who have been offered a permanent or multi‑year contract with a Saudi employer. It is the appropriate route for professionals such as engineers, doctors, consultants and other skilled staff who will reside in Saudi Arabia for an extended period. The visa is linked to a formal employment contract and enables the holder to obtain an Iqama that remains valid as long as the employment continues.

Once the visa is issued, the employee’s sponsor – usually the Saudi company – must register the worker with the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development. The sponsor is responsible for renewing the Iqama annually and ensuring compliance with Saudi labour regulations throughout the employee’s stay.

Temporary/Project‑Based Work Visa

A temporary work visa is designed for short‑term assignments, technical installations, field projects or seasonal work that typically lasts from a few weeks to several months. This visa is suitable for engineers, technicians, IT specialists and consultants who are deployed to Saudi Arabia for a specific project and will return to the UK once the task is completed.

The duration of the visa is tied to the project contract and cannot be extended beyond the authorised period without applying for a new visa. Holders are permitted to work only for the sponsoring company and must leave the Kingdom when the visa expires, unless they secure a different visa category.

Sponsorship Arrangements

For a standard work visa, the Saudi employer acts as the primary sponsor and must provide a Saudi‑issued work permit (Iqama) before the employee can start. The sponsor handles the medical examination, insurance and any required labour‑market approvals.

In contrast, a temporary work visa also requires a sponsor, but the sponsor’s obligations are limited to the project’s timeframe. The sponsoring UK‑based company must supply a support letter and assignment details, while the Saudi host company typically issues a short‑term work permit that expires with the project.

Documentation Requirements

Both visa types require a core set of documents: a valid passport, a signed employment contract, and a recent medical report. However, a standard work visa also demands a Saudi Ministry of Labour approval and a longer‑term residence permit application.

A temporary work visa focuses on the project contract, a detailed scope of work, and a support letter from the UK employer confirming the assignment’s limited nature. Additional paperwork may include project licences or specialised equipment permits, depending on the industry.

Post‑Arrival Obligations

After entering Saudi Arabia on a standard work visa, the employee must complete the Iqama registration, undergo a mandatory medical clearance and obtain a Saudi ID card. The sponsor continues to manage visa renewals and any changes to employment status.

For holders of a temporary work visa, the post‑arrival steps are similar but condensed: a short‑term Iqama is issued for the project duration, and the sponsor must ensure the worker departs before the visa expires. Failure to leave on time can affect future visa applications.
